We’ve all heard the story about the Apple and the Doctor, have we not? One apple = no doctor. Sounds like a pretty great deal. But, have you heard the one about the blueberry and the belly fat? It’s similar to the apple story. That’s right. One (handful) blueberry = no belly fat.

Say what!?

You heard me. Studies have shown that the little low-calorie, high-fiber antioxidant-packed super fruit is perhaps more super than we thought! Not only do these berries improve vascular health, reduce inflammation, and pack a powerful vitamin E & beta carotene punch, but they’ve also been linked to the reduction of belly fat.

If you ask me, this is a big win for women everywhere! Blueberries can do what hours in the gym often cannot. That extra layer of insulation (that’s the best way to refer to it in these cooler months) is often the last thing to go when trying to slim down and tone up.

In celebration of this exciting news, I leave you with a few blueberry packed recipes previously featured on Nourish. Now, eat up!

Blueberry Flax Seed Steel Cut Oatmeal

What You’ll Need::

  • 1/4 cup steel cut oats
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1/4 cup yogurt (my favorite is Brown Cow, Maple!)
  • 2 Tbsp raw almonds, chopped
  • 1 Tbsp raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 tsp ground flax seeds
  • handful of blueberries

What To Do::

  1. cook the oatmeal according to manufacturer’s directions
  2. combine the yogurt, almonds, and seeds in your favorite breakfast bowl
  3. add the oatmeal to yogurt mixture
  4. top with fresh fruit
  5. enjoy!

Summer Fruit Salad

What You’ll Need::

  • Hearty greens. Think spring mix, kale, baby spinach
  • FRUIT! Really, whatever your heart desires. This particular mix includes:
    • Straberries (duh)
    • Blueberries
    • Granny Smith Apples
  • Nuts. My favorites are pecans and almonds
  • Your dressing of choice. Oil based will be MUCH better than cream based.
  • And, if you’re feeling really crazy, a soft cheese like:
    • Goat
    • Feta
    • Blue

What To Do::

  1. Chop it all up
  2. Mix it all together
  3. Enjoy!
